Dielectric loss refers to the phenomenon where heat is generated inside a dielectric material under an external electric field, indicating that some electrical energy has been converted into thermal energy and dissipated. Under the effect of an electric field, the energy consumed by the dielectric due to heating per unit time is fully referred to as dielectric loss power. There are many causes of dielectric loss, with five common types including conduction loss, polarization loss, ionization loss, structural loss, and non-uniform dielectric loss. As for ionization loss, it is caused by gas — when some solid materials contain pores and the applied electric field strength exceeds the strength required by the gas, the gas absorbs energy and causes loss. Under high-frequency electric fields and low temperature, a type of dielectric loss closely related to the compactness of the internal structure of the dielectric is called structural loss. Engineering dielectric materials, due to different dielectric properties of the constituent substances and uneven electric field distribution, form localized areas with higher electric field strength causing dielectric loss.
