Dielectric Loss Testers: Testing the Insulation Performance of High-Voltage Bushings
The Dielectric Loss Tester, commonly referred to in the power industry as a "Tan Delta Tester" or "Dielectric Loss Bridge," is a precision instrument specifically designed for measuring the dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) and capacitance (Cx) of insulation materials in high-voltage electrical equipment.
If insulation material is compared to a capacitor, an ideal insulator does not consume electrical energy. However, in reality, insulation materials heat up and consume energy under an AC electric field — this loss is "dielectric loss." The higher the tanδ value, the worse the insulation performance (such as dampness, aging, or deterioration). Therefore, it is a critical indicator for judging transformer and other high-voltage equipment insulation conditions.
